When we first saw this backyard in the Castro District, it was comprised of a steep hill a brick path and uneven terracing that didn’t allow for safe use of the space. Our challenge? Create a safe, child friendly space that takes full advantage of the yard.

Our work started by creating a functional artificial turf area to add more depth to the yard. We then built two finished concrete retaining walls designed to multi-task as planters. Using a combination of recycled granite and redwood stairs, we created a staircase from the turf up to the yards top terrace. In the corner, you’ll see the playhouse we built in accordance with our child friendly goal and a terrific way for a kid to get back down to the yard, a slide. The installation of a wire railing with metal frame and wooden caps added an element of security for those enjoying the upper terrace of this newly transformed backyard playground.
